Sparring

Over the years I've trained with BJK people that regard it as essential and BJK people that have no interest in it whatsoever. However some students feel the need to test themselves in this way, they just have to tick that box in their mind that what we do works. In the Bujinkan there is not a culture of sparring or pressure testing, actually there are very few BJK Dojo that do this training world wide.

If you're a BJK Instructor or Student that would like to talk about this training and how we approach it then feel free to contact me, I'm more than happy to pass on what we've learned along the way if it helps you with your training.

All these photos were taken while sparring at about 25% so the camera could capture the movements, sometimes students wear Headguards and Handmits depending on the exercise.

Sparring / Randori

Sparring / Randori is done against random attacks using Bujinkan Ninjutsu techniques as both the attacks and defences, then once you can do that pretty well we start to add in attacks from outside our system (shoots, different kicks etc)

My thinking on sparring is that the person defending needs to be successful 80% of the time and fail 20% of the time. Whatever speed that success/failure rate occurs at then that's the speed they're capable of sparring at. It starts off slow but over time it becomes a lot faster as the attacker sets the pace with the 80/20 rule in mind.

By the time you achieve your Black Belt you will be able to apply many techniques at a real life pace against random attacks.

Resistance in sparring , added in slowly overtime, is very important. Non resistant fully compliant training is essential for learning the mechanics, but eventually you do want more resistance added in so you can learn to apply your training on a person trying to resist your techniques. After all they're not just going to sit there and let you do whatever you want to them, they're going to fight back.

We also Pressure Test your responses to different situations, it's quite different to sparring.

Does Bujinkan Ninjutsu include sparring?

Most Bujinkan schools do not spar, and very few Bujinkan dojo worldwide train this way. At Ninjutsu Melbourne we include sparring (randori) and pressure testing so students know their techniques work.

How does ninjutsu randori work?

Randori is sparring against random attacks using Bujinkan Ninjutsu techniques for both the attacks and the defences. Once students can do that well, we add attacks from outside our system, such as shoots and different kicks.

What is the 80/20 rule in sparring?

The defender should succeed about 80% of the time and fail about 20%. Whatever speed gives that ratio is the speed they spar at. It starts slowly and gets faster over time as the attacker sets the pace.

Is ninjutsu sparring safe?

Yes. Resistance is added slowly over time, and students sometimes wear headguards and hand mitts depending on the exercise. By black belt you can apply many techniques at a real life pace against random attacks.

Is sparring the same as pressure testing?

No. Sparring is against random attacks, while pressure testing isolates one area of study and puts a student under pressure from multiple opponents in turn.
