Sword Training Melbourne

The techniques we train in are from the Kukishinden Ryu school of martial arts.  We also do some basic sword draws, locks and strikes as well as Mutodori which is unarmed techniques against an opponent that has a sword. . It's not only about cutting your opponent, theres a lot more to learn about sword than that.

Buijnkan Soke Hatsumi Sensei

Sword Training

There are nine listed techniques each with several variations off the main exercise. We train these Kata as well as selected ones i've learned while in Japan.

Most of our sword kata training is done in pairs against nominated attacks with a nominated defence.

We do not use bladed weapons at our Dojo, all training is done with a Bokken or wooden sword. Metal swords require a special licence in Victoria, even the alloy blades and ornamental display swords some people have at home require a licence.

Shoto (Short Sword) Technique

Shoto Training

The short sword also known as the Wakizashi. Worn in the obi (belt) next to the katana at the side of the body. A versitile weapon used on it's own or with the sword as a pair (daisho)

This is a great picture of Hatsumi Sensei suprising an opponent with the Shoto after avoiding a cut, note the other hand pulling the opponents uniform down to manipulate his balance in towards the Shoto.

Daisho - Two Swords training

Daisho Training

Usually reffering to both the Katana and Shoto when being worn or when drawn and used together.

Defence can be against a person trying to take the sword from your belt while you're wearing them or against a sword cut from your opponent with your swords in your belt or already drawn.
